Instead of contriving all sorts of non-sequiturs. I’m a good example of young person who left the faith. It wasn’t inadequate parenting or a lack of good Christian mentorship, it’s the beliefs themselves. Something many Christians refuse to accept. It sticks in their craw that anyone could find fault with their precious faith so they refuse to accept that a young person rejects Christianity because they find it irrational and untenable. So they drum up all sorts of psycho-babble and red herring excuses.

I grew up in a devout Christian home and community with no shortage of good Christian examples. But Christian teachings never sat right with me from the get go. They came off as unbelievable, absurd, made up, unscientific and unbelievable. But did anyone ever ask ME my thoughts and feelings? No, they just spoon fed me assuming I would embrace these beliefs as dogmatically as they did. So I did what most kids do who are dependent on their parents for their very survival… I went along for the ride and pretended I believed. It doesn’t pay to tell the people they are delusional when they are feeding, clothing, housing and schooling you. Of course the time will come when a young person gains enough independence to stop pretending and speak out what he truly thinks.
And so it was with me. This is the information age; we no longer live in monotheistic cocoons but on a vast playing field of ideas some of them contrary to Christianity. I’ve heard all sides and listened to all the arguments ad nauseum and it’s I simply find the atheists and their arguments considerably more compelling, rational and convincing than I do Christians. I know it’s not easy for Christians to hear but on the battleground of ideas Christianity is losing badly. Europe is a good example, if you want to see where the US is headed in the future.
